HUDDERSFIELD MUSIC SOCIETY
The eightieth season of the Society opens with a visit by the Russian pianist
Ilya Itin. Winner of last year's Leeds International Pianoforte Competition,
Itin's programme includes works by Chopin, Messiaen and Prokofiev.
There are three very special string quartets, each making their first appear-
ances with us. First of all the World-renowned Takacs Quartet from Hungary
will be performing Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven (op 59 No 1). In Decem-
ber we welcome the New Leipzig Quartet to play Haydn, Brahms and Janacek
(No 1). Our last concert features the Schidlof Quartet, named after the violist
of the Amadeus Quartet, who are establishing a splendid reputation for them-
selves.
In November we have our first opportunity to welcome the young baritone
Paul Robinson accompanied by Julian Milford. As well as helping us to cel-
ebrate Schubert's bi-centenary, they will be performing Wolf, Fauré, Poulenc
and Britten.
Martin Roscoe is our second pianist of the Season, and we particularly look
forward to his performance of Schubert's last Sonata.
Making a welcome return visit to us is the Gould Piano Trio. They will be
joined by the clarinettist Robert Plane to perform the Messiaen Quartet for
the End of Time.
Season Tickets will be on sale at our March and April Concerts, priced at last
year's rates as follows:

The Committee would like to take this opportunity of thanking in particular
the Season Ticket holders for their past support of the Society's Programmes.
It goes without saying that we rely upon a continuance of this committed at-

welcome additions to our regular audiences.

Ilya Itin first came to the public's attention in September 1996 when he
swept the board of all the major prizes in the prestigious Leeds
International Piano Competition. Not only did he receive the first prize
but he was the recipient of the Contemporary Music award and won the
television viewers' poll.
He was born in 1967 and studied at the Sverdlovsk (now
Yekaterinberg) Music School for Gifted Children under Natalia
Litvinova and gave his first professional recital at the age of five.
After continuing his studies at the Tchaikovsky State Conservatoire in
Moscow and appearing in recitals and with the orchestras of the former
Soviet Union, he moved, in 1990, to New York where he won first
prize and the Chopin Prize in the Robert Casedesus Competition in
Cleveland. He made his BBC Prom debut in August of this year,
Playing the Grieg Piano Concerto with the BBC Phiharmonic.

Polonaise-Fantaisie in A flat op 61
Chopin (1810-1849)
The Polonaise is a stately Polish national dance in simple triple time,
probably originating in the 16th Century. Many composers from Bach
to Schubert, used the form, but Chopin's, in which he found an outlet
for his feelings for his native Poland, are outstanding.
The Polonaise-Fantaisie was written in 1845/46 and is a much more
extensive and complex work than the earlier lighter Polonaises. Chopin
performed only for his close circle of friends and musical peers and each
performance would vary slightly as he improvised on the central
structure. The work expresses his passionate involvement with the
sufferings of his countrymen under Russian domination.
Four Mazurkas op 30/1 to 4 1836/37
1 in C minor; 2 in B minor; 3 in D flat; 4 in C# minor
Chopin
The Mazurka was one of Chopin's favourite and most characteristic
genres, represented by more than 50 pieces, dating from 1830 to the
end of his life. The four op 30 were dedicated to Polish-born Princess
Maria Warttenberg, whose thé-dansants for children at the Blue Palace
in Warsaw had often been attended by Chopin.
Barcarolle in F# op 60
Le Baiser de l'enfant Jesus
Chopin
Messiaen (1908-1992)
Messiaen's music, which is amongst the most influential and
idiosyncratic of the century, is a compound of his deep Catholic faith, his
celebration of human love, his love of nature and his interest in
synaesthesia (the sensation of colour evoked by sounds). His harmony,
deriving from Debussy's use of 7ths and 9ths and modal progressions of
chords, is rich and chromatic, and his treatment of rhythm new,
involving irregular metres, some of them originating in ancient Greeksvel
procedures.
Messiaen was born in Avignon and studied composition at the Paris

Conservatoire. In 1931 he became organist of l'Eglise de la Trinite,
Paris and in 1936 began teaching at the Ecole Normale de Musique. He
was imprisoned by the Germans during the war for two years and after
his release in 1942 he was appointed teacher at the Paris Conservatoire.
In 1943 he wrote the vast 20-movement keyboard symphony "Vingt
Regards sur l'enfant Jesus" of which "Le Baiser" is no 15 - a mystical
poem bearing in the score as a sub-title the words "At each communion
the Child, Jesus, sleeps with us beside he door, then throws it open upon
a marvellous garden and rushes out into the bright light to embrace us".
Interval of 20 minutes
Sonata no 8 in B flat op 84
Andante dolce; Andante sognando, Vivace
(Last performed in 1989 by Hugh Tinney)
Prokofiev (1891-1953) 2
Prokofiev wrote nine piano sonatas and left a tenth unfinished. Like the
sixth and seventh the eighth was begun in 1939 but was not completed M
until 1944. The composer had spent fifteen years abroad but was now
settled in his native Russia whose leading cultural figures felt it a matter
of pride to be associated with their nation and to contribute as much as
possible to solving its problems. These three sonatas are called the
"War Sonatas" and must surely reflect Russian feelings in those dreadful
years.
The 8th Sonata has obvious associations with some of his scores for
opera and ballet - the opening movement suggesting Natasha's theme in
War & Peace and the second at first rather Schubertian movement
recalling "Romeo & Juliet". But alongside these lyrical connections
there is much percussive aggression and fierce virtuosity; particularly is
this so in the final movement - an exhilarating tarantella with a savage
march-like middle section

The Takacs is today recognised as one of the world's foremost string
quartets. Formed in 1975 in Budapest, the quartet's talent was quickly
recognised when they were awarded the first prizes at the Evian and
Portsmouth International Competitions. Since 1983 the quartet has held
a residency at the University of Colorado, and in 1988 it received a similar
appointment at the Guildhall School of Music.
They have played several times at the Salzburg, Berlin, mostly Mozart and
Ravinia festivals, and this year at the Aspen, Tanglewood, Cheltenham and
City of London Festivals. They have given Schubert and Bartok cycles
in many cities, and Beethoven cycles are scheduled for 1999/2000.
They record very actively for Decca.

Quartet in C Op 33 No 3 (The Bird)
Haydn (1732-1809)
Allegro Moderato; Scherzando - allegretto;
Adagio; Finale - Presto
(Last performed in 1987 by the Chilingirian)
Although often called the "Father of the Symphony" Haydn could perhaps
be described with greater accuracy as the founder of the string quartet.
With over eighty compositions for this medium, and no obvious
forerunners of significance, the composer may truly be said to have
established it.
This quartet is one of a set of six written in 1791 and dedicated to the
Grand Duke Paul, who visited Vienna at this time. Haydn said that these
were written "in an entirely new and particular manner". The end of the
domination of the first violin was complete and all instruments have an
equal share in importance.
One reason for this quartet's name "The Bird" is found in the grace notes
heard in the principal subject of the first movement, and another the bird-
like duet in the tiny trio. But throughout the work one can find a grace
and delicacy reminiscent of the birds.
Quartet in D K 499 (Hoffmeister)
Mozart (1756-1791)
Allegretto, Menuetto and Trio, Adagio, Allegro
(Last performed in 1954 by the Vegh Quartet)
Mozart's string quartets are sharply divided into two groups: the 15 early
quartets written between 1770 and 1774, and the 10 "great" quartets - the
six dedicated to Haydn, this lone quartet, and the 3 "Prussian" quartets all
written between 1782 and 1790. In their form and style these quartets
were much influenced by the model of Haydn, as Mozart was in turn to
influence the older composer.
This quartet demonstrates the mastery and brilliance of Mozart's handling
of the medium. Starting with a unison passage the first movement

develops into a dialogue between various combinations of instruments.
"The Minuet is unique In the main section each instrument seems to enact
its role unconcerned with the others; the Trio, in the minor, is a piece of
musical wizardry" (Einstein). The Adagio contains an almost unbearable
depth of sorrow, and resolution of the element of despair comes only at
the end of the final movement.
Interval of twenty minutes
Quartet in F Op 59 (Rasumovsky) No 1 Beethoven (1770-1827)
Allegro, Allegretto vivace e sempre scherzando; sonst dier
Adagio molto e mesto; Thème Russe
(Last performed in 1988 by the Lindsay Quartet)
Beethoven was the third of the four great "Viennese" composers who
developed the string quartet up to the late 1820s. He had already shown
his complete mastery of the medium in the 6 quartets of the Op18 set.
However with the three quartets of Op 59, written six years later and
dedicated to the Count Rasumovsky, the Russian ambassador to Vienna,
we have entered a different universe.
In this, the first of the set, the range of the instruments and the dynamic
contrasts are increased beyond belief. In particular the first violin spends
a great deal of time at the very top of the instrument. The work is almost
twice as long as any previous quartet by the composer, or for that matter
Haydn or Mozart. There is greater freedom and complexity in the use of
the musical forms.
The first movement starts with a deceptively simple tune given by the cello
and developing into a long paragraph of melody. The second is not
divided into the usual scherzo and trio sections, although containing
elements of each. The third is one of the most moving adagios written by
the composer. Over the original manuscript he wrote "A weeping Willow
or Acacia tree over my brother's grave". The closing cadenza leads to the
last movement, based upon a Russian folk tune.

Paul Robinson began his musical education as a boy chorister at King's
College, Cambridge, and later returned there as a choral scholar. He has
recently completed his studies at the Royal College of Music. He has
already had numerous solo engagements in both opera and oratorio. He
has also featured in several broadcast performances, and recorded for
Hyperion.
Britten
Julian Milford graduated from Oxford in English in 1991, before studying
piano and piano accompaniment at the Curtis Institute and at the Guildhall
In the past two years he has become recognised as one of Britain's most
promising young accompanists, both in chamber music and duo
repertoire
We are grateful to the Countess of Munster Musical Trust for their
generous financial support for this concert.

Liebesbotschaft Love's Message Kriegers Ahnung Warrior's Premonition
Frühlingssehnsucht Spring Longing Ständchen Serenade Aufenthalt
Resting Place In Der Ferne Far Away Abschied Farewell
With over 600 songs for solo voice and piano, encompassing an
astonishing range and universality, Schubert may be regarded as the most
accomplished song writer ever. These seven settings of poems by Ludwig
Rellstab form part of a group of songs published posthumously by
Haslinger in 1829. Although they contain no particular connecting
thread, it is thought that the composer himself had wished the Rellstab
songs to be published as a whole. There is evidence that the poet
intended the songs to be set by Beethoven, by whose executors they were
passed to Schubert.
Selection from the Italian Songbook
Gesegnet sei, durch den die Welt entstund
Geselle woll'n wir uns in Kutten hüllen
Schon streckt' ich aus im Bett die müden Glieder
Ein Ständchen Euch zu bringen
Hugo Wolf (1860-1903)
If Schubert was the supreme composer of the German lied, there are many
who consider that Wolf ran him at least a close second. The Italienisches
Liederbuch consists of forty-four songs written between 1890 and 1896.
Despite the title, there is nothing Italianate in the musical settings of these
songs, except for the suggestion of a guitar in the accompaniment of Ein
Ständchen. The translations from the original Italian were made by Paul
Heyse

In 1891 Fauré visited Venice for the first time. He wrote to a friend
"What a country! And what a life we are leading! The tranquillity I
need for working is not to be found here, but the tiny scrap I've sketched
out, to a text by Verlaine, could perhaps turn into something when I get
back to my Paris den." Mandoline sets the dreamy, shadowy atmosphere
for the following love songs. En Sourdine is the incontestible masterpiece
of the cycle, a song of intense and tender lyricism. Green is mischievous,
a high-spirited declaration of feeling. À Clymène offers a kind of portrait
of the beloved. C'est l'extase brings all these elements together, making
use of themes heard earlier.
Poulenc (1899-1963)
Le Bestiaire
Le Dromadaire The Dromedary La Chèvre de Thibet The Tibetan Goat
La Sauterelle The Grasshopper
Le Dauphin The Dolphin L'écrevisse
The Crayfish La Carpe The Carp
Composed in 1919, these are amongst the earliest of Poulenc's many
settings of his contemporary, Apollinaire. The composer shared much of
the irreverent wit, sarcasm and tender lyricism that characterise the music
of Eric Satie. Yet even though this work was originally scored for
accompaniment by flute, clarinet, bassoon and string quartet, it would be
a mistake to regard it as a latter-day Carnival of the Animals
"To sing Le Bestiaire with irony and knowingly is a complete
misunderstanding. Such a performance would show no comprehension
of Apollinaire's poetry and my music. From Le Bestiaire I sensed a sure
but mysterious link with Apollinaire's poetry."(F.P.)
Folk-song Arrangements
Benjamin Britten (1913-1976)
The Foggy-foggy Dew, The Sally Gardens, The Plough Boy.
Britten wrote 6 volumes of British folk-song arrangements, and these three
are amongst the best known and loved. Much of their appeal lies in the
originality of the piano accompaniments.

first and the second Viennese Schools as well as contemporary music.
Since formation, the Quartet has given performances in more than 30

They have recorded over a dozen CDs, and earlier this year embarked
upon recording Schubert's complete output for the string quartet.
They have shown their support for European friendship with their
participation in a Beethoven cycle performed by six young quartets in ow

J Haydn (1732-1809)
Quartet in D major Op 20 No 4
Allegro di molto: Un poco adagio - affetuoso: Menuetto alla Zingarese:
Presto scherzando.000M
(First performance at these concerts)
Between 1768 and 1772 Haydn wrote the three sets of quartets Op 9, Op
17 and Op 20. Although he had written early quartets over ten years
previously, these sets represent the first he had composed in the full flush
of a mature style of quartet composition. In the "Sun" Quartets of Op 20,
in particular, he attained the distinctive range of tone-colours which we
have come to expect from the combination of all four string parts.
The first movement is remarkable for its spirit and gravitas. The second,
a theme and variations in D minor, ends in a moving coda. In the third and
fourth movements the composer drinks deeply of the well of folk music,
which influenced and inspired him greatly. The third movement is
gloriously syncopated, and the last bubbles over with hilarity.
Quartet No 1 (Kreutzer Sonata)
Janáček (1854-1928)
Adagio con moto: Con moto: Con moto, vivace, andante:
Con moto, adagio
(Last performed in 1993 by the Prazak Quartet)
Undoubtedly the most outstanding Czech composer since Smetana and
Dvořák, Leoš Janáček developed an original and highly personal musical
style which reached its fruition in his late works, which include his only
two string quartets. As Kodály and Bartok studied and made use of their
native Hungarian folk music, so Janáček looked to the folk heritage of his
country.
At 69 years of age, Janáček wrote this work at the request of the world-
famous Bohemian Quartet and completed it in nine days a wonder
indeed! He drew his inspiration from the controversial Tolstoy novel
Kreutzer Sonata, in which the heroine, unhappily married, throws herself
into the arms of an unworthy lover, and dies tragically. However the

quartet is not intended to describe the events of the book but rather to
express the composer's personal stand against the ill-treatment of women:
"What I had in mind was the suffering of a woman, beaten and tortured
to death...."
Much of the music is built up of tiny motivic cells which are repeated,
developed and varied within an apparently free structure, involving
frequent changes of metre and tempo and making use of effects such as
"sul ponticello tremolo". The overall effect is of strong dramatic and
emotional intensity.

Quartet in B Flat Op 67
Brahms (1833-1897)
Vivace: Andante: Agitato (Allegretto non troppo):
Finale Poco allegretto con variazioni
(Last performed in 1935 by the Griller String Quartet)
This quartet was completed in 1876 and dedicated to the composer's
friend Engelmann, a professor in Utrecht, and himself a capable cellist. It
is a work of close knit texture. The opening movement, with its horn-like
first theme, has many changes of rhythm, with swift and frequent
transitions between the major and minor modes. In contrast, a smooth
theme is heard twice in the development section.
The second movement opens with a broad and stately melody, which is
interrupted by a bolder and more agitated section. The viola has the most
important part in the third movement, the other strings being muted. It
must be remembered that the viola was one of Brahms' favourite
instruments, and that he wrote for it with unusual understanding and
affection. This movement ends with the quietest of codas.
The Finale consists of a short theme with variations; again the viola is
prominent. The horn theme from the first movement is re-introduced.

(Last performed in 1990 by the Prometheus Ensemble)
A Dumka is a form of Slavonic folk ballad which juxtaposes intense
melancholy and wild gaiety. In this trio Dvořák lets the spirit of Dumka
permeate the entire work, giving it the title in the plural form, and giving
coherence to what is in effect a sonnet series of movements. The work
was composed in winter 1890/91, Dvořák himself being at the keyboard
for its first performance.
Every movement has a change in tempo, emphasising the duality of the
form, and each movement is in a different key. The composer never
surpassed the brilliance of the piano writing in this work and has given the
string players magnificent parts to play.
Elégie
Josef Suk (1874-1935)
(First performance at these concerts)
Born in Southern Bohemia, Josef Suk was a fine violinist, and at the age
of seventeen he became one of the founders of the famous Bohemian
Quartet. He studied under Dvořák and married his daughter.
The Elégie was written in 1902, to commemorate the first anniversary of
the death of Julius Zeyer, a 19th Century Czech writer. Originally scored
for violin and cello, accompanied by string quartet, harp and
harmonium, it was subsequently re-scored for the version heard tonight.
INTERVAL OF TWENTY MINUTES
Quatuor pour la Fin du Temps Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992)
(Last performed in 1990 by the Prometheus Ensemble)
Born at Avignon, Messiaen studied at the Paris Conservatoire under
Dukas and Dupré. He was a religious mystic of the most extreme type,
and his works (choral, piano, organ and orchestral) reflect this. His
unique methods of composition have strongly influenced younger French
Ocr'd Text:
composers, making him one of the most outstanding figures of twentieth
century French music.
In particular he was influenced by Hindu music, especially its rhythms.
Much of his work displays his deep love of nature, with inspiration
derived from birdsong using an almost literal transcription of it at times.
A prisoner of war for two years, Messiaen wrote his End of Time Quartet
in a Silesian prison camp, where it received its first performance, on
borrowed instruments, in the bitter winter of January 1941. The composer
himself was at the piano. The printed score contains a quotation from
chapter X of the Revelations of St John the Divine: -
"I saw a mighty angel come down from heaven clothed with a cloud; and a
rainbow was on his head and his face was as it were the sun, and his feet as
pillars of fire. He set his right foot upon the sea and his left foot on the earth, and
standing upon the sea and upon the earth lifted up his hand to heaven and swore
by Him that liveth for ever and ever, saying: THERE SHALL BE TIME NO
LONGER: but in the days of the trumpet of the seventh angel, the mystery of God
shall be finished."
1. Crystal Liturgy. Clarinet and violin play florid lines "like a bird" over
ostinatos in chords for the piano and in harmonics for the cello.
2. Vocalise for the angel who announces the end of time. The outer
sections represent the majesty of the angel, and the inner "the impalpable
harmonies of the heavens". The cascading chords of the piano are the
raindrops in the rainbow.
3. Abyss of the birds for clarinet The abyss - the sadness and desolation
of time; the birds - our longing for light, stars, joyful sounds.
4. Intermezzo - a scherzo without the piano
5. In praise of the Eternity of Jesus for cello and piano.
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was in God, and the Word was
God".
6. Dance of Fury for the seven trumpets. The sound of the four
instruments in unison is intended to represent that of the trumpets.
7. Cluster of Rainbows for the angel who announces the End of Time.
8. In praise of the immortality of Jesus for violin and piano carries us
aloft in timelessness to eternal peace with God.

Sonata in C minor Hob XVI/20 Joseph Haydn (1732-1809)
Allegro moderato: Andante con Moto: Allegro
Haydn composed over 60 keyboard sonatas. Of these only a few later
works are regularly performed, and the rest are neglected - as many would
say, unjustly so. This C minor sonata was composed in his middle period,
round about 1780.
The two outer movements are contrasted types of Sturm und Drang and
flank a serene Andante. The first contains sufficient thematic material to
rival a Mozart piano concerto, and the last is "an unrelenting outburst of
impassioned rhetoric expressed in terms of the utmost formal cohesion and
great technical virtuosity." (John Mc Cabe)
Sonata in Bb major D 960
Schubert (1797-1828)
Molto moderato: Andante sostenuto: Scherzo allegro vivace conne
delicatezza - Trio: Allegro ma non troppo
It is believed that Schubert's last three sonatas were composed between
May and September 1828, and that the fair copy was made only a few
weeks before his death. As Alfred Brendel has pointed out, all three
sonatas are closely related thematically. But they are entirely different in
character.
The first movement of D 960 sounds valedictory. Yet, as the immediate
cause of Schubert's death was typhoid, it seems unlikely that he had any
inkling of his imminent demise. The hymn-like first theme is interrupted
by a mysterious low trill on Gb followed by a pause. This descending
motif Gb (or G)-F permeates the entire movement. The second
movement continues the melancholy hymn-like serenity of the first, in
A-B-A form, much as in the Adagio of the String Quintet. The solemnity
of the Trio contrasts with the fluency of the Scherzo. The final movement
opens with a G octave which recurs before each restatement of the main
theme. It is interesting that Beethoven used a similar device in his last
completed work - the substitute finale of the Bb quartet op 130.

Szymanowski (1882-1937)
Scheherezade: Tantris the Clown: Don Juan's Serenade
Masques op 34
Of Polish origin, Szymanowski was born to a wealthy family living in the
Ukraine. He studied at the Warsaw Conservatoire where he met and
became a member of the "Young Poland" group, devoted to the revival of
music of a specifically Polish character, a style which had been eclipsed
following the death of Chopin 50 years earlier.
In fact Szymanowski was to become the leading exponent of Polish music
in his generation. His early style was largely influenced by the spirit of
Chopin, and by Scriabin.
Masques was composed in 1915 and 1916. The opening movement
depicts in many variations a single seductive mood. Tantris is based upon
Ernst Hardt's distortion of the Tristan theme, and depicts musically the
antics of a crossed lover. The third movement consists of music of an
improvisatory character, surrounding the central Serenade. ZÁRLIAH

The Schidlof Quartet was founded in 1994, and has rapidly established a reputation as
one of the most exciting and fastest developing young quartets in the UK. They have
also gained much critical acclaim for their quality of tone and wonderfully warm
interpretations. Named in memory of the of the distinguished violist Peter Schidlof,
its members come from Russia, Israel and England, and draw on their wealth of
experience as international soloists, chamber musicians and competition winners.
The Schidlof Quartet's extensive performances include appearances at Wigmore Hall,
(four sold out performances), South Bank Centre, Symphony Hall Birmingham and
many other major venues throughout the UK. Festival visits include Dartington
International Summer School, Harrogate International, Spitalfields, Warwick, Kings
Lynn and Norfolk & Norwich Festival where they have been appointed Associate
Quartet, the first association of its kind. Overseas the Quartet has been invited to
France, Holland, Israel, Russia and Switzerland (including a major Brahms Centenary
Festival in Geneva). They have also toured to the Czech Republic for the Prague
International String Quartet Festival and Italy for Festival RomaEuropa, both supported
by the British Council.
As Quartet in Residence at the De Montfort University they present highly acclaimed
series in Leicester, Lincoln and the University campuses across Central England. The
National Federation of Music Societies invited the Quartet to take part in their Concert
Promoters Network for the 1996/97 season, where their increasing reputation has led
to numerous concerts. Through their commitment to music education and the future
of audiences for chamber music, they have started the National Education Programme
for the London String Quartet Foundation. The Quartet has been broadcast on BBC
Radio 3, Classic FM and have recently embarked on a series of recordings for Linn
records. Their first CD of Shostakovich was recommended in Critics Choice of the
Sunday Times and Sunday Telegraph, and was selected in BBC Music Magazine Critics
Choice for 1997. In January 1998 they were invited to perform a programme of
Mozart Chamber Music at the Queen Elizabeth Hall with Murray Perahia.

Quartet in C major, Op 76 No 3 (Emperor)
Haydn (1732-1809)
Allegro: Poco adagio cantabile: Minuet & Trio: Presto
(Last performed in 1990 by the Vanbrugh Quartet)
The quartet which embodies Haydn's Austrian National Hymn
(composed a few months earlier) needs little introduction, though the
greatness and popularity of the hymn tend to diminish the impact of the
other movements. There are many interesting features of the work - the
thick texture of the first movement where there is an unusual amount of
double stopping - the finale in the minor key until the final coda - the fact
that the minuet and the finale begin with the same four notes.
The variation movement is the heart of the matter, yet with simple
variations, in which the theme is taken up by the instruments in turn, the
variations being contained in the differing accompaniments.
Quartet No 4, in D Op 83 (1949)
Shostakovich (1906-1975)
Allegretto: Andantino: Allegretto: Allegretto
(Last performed in 1982 by the Coull Quartet)
Shostakovich wrote fifteen string quartets, his first appearing in 1938,
immediately after the fifth symphony.
The fourth quartet is wholly lyrical. The principal material of the
opening movement is like the bagpipe music of some Eastern culture, but
as only Shostakovich would have re-created it; the use made of the modal
inflections and the frenetic pitch of intensity arrived at after only 30 bars
are very characteristic. There is perfect timing in the way this passage
leads to a warm expressive section, the effect of which is greatly to modify
and subdue the bagpipe music when it returns.
The Andantino, in F minor, is one of the most heart-warming of all
Shostakovich's slow movements, an ardent lyrical expression with
prominence given to the first violin. Instead of a scherzo, there is a
classical allegro in C minor, and this is followed by a very individual finale,
in which the strains of an Eastern (Caucasian?) Folk music are invoked.
For the most part sparsely textured, but with a central climax that is almost
orchestral in character, the finale is based on a number of short re-iterated
ideas which are combined in various ways, rather in the manner of a
closely controlled improvisation. (Hugh Ottaway, condensed)

INTERVAL OF TWENTY MINUTES
Quartet No 15 in A minor, Op 132
Beethoven (1770-1827)
Assai sostenuto - Allegro: Allegro ma non tanto:
Molto Adagio - Andante: Alla marcia, assai vivace-Piu allegro-Presto:
Allegro appassionato
(Last performed in 1987 by the Endellion Quartet)
The first movement starts with a slow introduction, the principal
motif of which appears in various guises during the subsequent allegro.
Its unorthodox form was described by Vincent d'Indy as "three separate
expositions, interrupted by developments of the introductory theme"; but
it is rather in a loose sonata form, ending in a long coda. A second
subject has a serene but pleading, almost Schubertian nature.
The second movement is rather like a slow scherzo. It is
thematically related to the preceding movement, with an upward-bearing
motif followed by a descending one. The trio is another manifestation of
"bagpipe" music, although based further west than the example of
Shostakovich, being reminiscent of the musette.
This quartet was much influenced by Beethoven's serious illness
during the winter of 1824/25. The third movement is entitled "A song of
thanksgiving, in the Lydian mode, offered to the divinity by a
convalescent". It has two constituents - a chorale which has five lines,
and is heard three times, and a more animated section headed in the score
"feeling new strength" which appears twice.
A short march movement follows. The fifth movement was
originally intended to be the finale of the ninth symphony and it is
interesting that like its choral successor, it is preceded by an instrumental
recitative. It is in rondo form, with an impassioned waltz-like refrain.
The movement is in the mood of dogged determination so typical of
Beethoven. In the final coda the pace quickens to Presto, and the key
changes from A minor to A major.
